
What four road tests say about the Lucid Gravity's 450-mile rating
Full-charge tests put the Lucid Gravity between 310 and 401.7 miles, while a separate charging test recovered 152 miles in 15 minutes. Each number answers a different road-trip question.

Fifteen minutes on a 400 kW charger in Garner, North Carolina, bought the Lucid Gravity Grand Touring 152 miles at 80 mph. That is a strong charging result. On Kyle Conner's comparison loop, however, a Porsche Cayenne Electric recovered about 34 miles more in the same time despite having a smaller battery.
Kyle Conner published that run on 26 August 2026. Put beside two instrumented range tests from 2025 and two later owner-style highway runs, it shows why Lucid's headline EPA estimate of up to 450 miles cannot answer every road-trip question. The published results include 310, 388 and 401.7 miles on a charge, plus Conner's separate result of 152 miles recovered after a 15-minute stop. Those numbers measure different things.
The test that stopped measuring range
Conner's “10% challenge” deliberately ignores how far a full battery goes. The car arrives at a charger with 10 per cent, plugs in for exactly a quarter of an hour, then drives until it returns to 10 per cent. Conner framed it as a test of repeated road-trip legs after the initial battery has been depleted. The output is one number: miles gained per 15-minute stop.
His car was a 2027 Grand Touring on the aero wheels, five seats, 4,500 miles on it, tyres set cold to the door-card 42 psi. The site was an IONNA location he chose specifically because it has no load management, so the car could take everything it asked for. It did: the display briefly showed 400 kW at 830 volts within seconds of plugging in. Then the curve began walking down almost immediately — 356 kW at 16 per cent, 340 at 20, 322 at 25, 177 as the clock ran out. Fifteen minutes delivered 68.6 kWh and took the pack from 10 to 62 per cent.
The Cayenne, on the same loop, took 80 kWh in the same 15 minutes and went to 79 per cent. It was also the more efficient car on that highway run: 2.6 miles per kWh against the Gravity's 2.5. Conner said that result ran against his expectation that the Lucid would be the more efficient of the two.
He was careful about what that does and does not prove. He re-ran the charging session afterwards and reproduced the curve, which argued against a one-off thermal problem. He still regarded 152 miles as a strong result for a vehicle this large. His interpretation was that the Gravity's cell choice favours energy capacity over the highest sustained charging power, a sensible trade for maximum range that is less rewarding against a stopwatch.
The reviewer who talked himself out of a number, then hit it
Tom Moloughney of State of Charge has now tested the same car twice, and the gap between his two results is larger than the gap between most rival SUVs. His first attempt, in New Jersey, returned 345 miles; Lucid's diagnostics later showed a rear drive unit fault during the run, and there had been a 10 mph wind for its duration. He flew to Arizona to redo it on a loop around Phoenix.
Halfway through the retest he predicted that the Gravity would finish between 350 and 380 miles rather than clear 400. Every subsequent quarter went further than the last as the morning warmed from the low 40s into the 70s: 92.1 miles, then 97.7, then 101.2, then 110.7. He rolled off the highway at 401.7 miles having used 116.8 kWh at 3.43 miles per kWh, with the temperature at 72 degrees. Moloughney concluded that the large swing between his two tests pointed to substantial temperature sensitivity.
Configuration matters as much as weather. Moloughney's was the five-seat car on 20- and 21-inch aero wheels, the longest-range spec Lucid sells. Edmunds got 400 miles on all-seasons and 388 on summer Pirellis in its 60-per-cent-city loop; Car and Driver, running a three-row Grand Touring on 22- and 23-inch wheels at 75 mph, got 310. Same nameplate, same 123 kWh, 91 miles of difference.
What 400 miles actually feels like
Notch EV supplied the version of this test nobody designs: an actual journey. Rockport, Maine to New York City on 5 July, one direction, no loop, July 4th weekend traffic, air conditioning running, temperatures climbing towards 90. The car's navigation opened by predicting arrival at minus 2 per cent, swung to plus 11 in heavy traffic, then settled. It finished with 389 miles on the trip meter, 5 per cent showing and roughly 23 miles of indicated range in hand, averaging 3.57 miles per kWh.
That journey supports a roughly 400-mile summer range on the eastern seaboard, but it also took nine and a half hours without a charging stop. The driver questioned the practical value of going that long without a break and said the test itself was the reason he had resisted stopping to charge.
Which is the point Conner's stopwatch was already making. Once a battery holds this much, the 450 on the window sticker has stopped describing anything a driver experiences. What separates the Gravity from the Cayenne on a real 700-mile day is not how far each goes on a charge but how much distance each buys back while you are inside buying a coffee. On that measure the big-battery car finishes second.
