
The electric trucks at Hannover are ready. Europe's plugs are not
CATL launched a 1,000 km truck battery at IAA Transportation, Scania and BYD brought hardware you can order, and Germany promised 4,200 motorway charging points. Electric trucks remain 3% of the German fleet.

Hannover's message this week was not subtle. The motto above the halls at IAA Transportation 2026 is "We deliver," and on the evidence of the stands, the truck makers have. What nobody has delivered is somewhere to plug the things in.
The headline launch came from CATL, which used the show's opening day to put the second generation of its Tectrans commercial battery platform in front of European fleet buyers. The numbers are the kind that make a transport manager sit up: up to 1,000 km of range in the highest-capacity heavy-duty configuration, 80% state of charge in 25 minutes on a megawatt-class charger, and a service life engineered for 12 years and 1.5 million km while retaining 70% of original capacity.
What CATL is actually selling
Range is the advertisement. The engineering pitch underneath it is modularity. Tectrans II is built from standardised packs stacked in different counts to suit a duty cycle, works with either e-axle or central-drive layouts, and supports both plug-in charging and battery swapping. CATL has frozen the external dimensions, electrical interfaces and communication protocols, so a truck maker can drop a future cell chemistry into an existing vehicle without re-engineering the chassis around it. The company claims that halves vehicle development cycles and cuts battery-related R&D costs by 60% to 70%.
The physical specifications are more interesting than the range claim. Gravimetric energy density is 170 Wh/kg, which CATL says runs about 13% above the commercial-vehicle average and buys roughly 0.6 tonnes of extra payload at the same pack capacity — real money for an operator paid by the tonne-kilometre. System round-trip efficiency is quoted at 96%, from a full-tab, low-impedance cell design. The enclosure pairs a hot-formed steel upper cover with an aluminium housing rated at 250 kN lateral crush strength, over a floor plate designed to absorb a 1,000-joule strike. A multi-branch battery management system can isolate a failed section and keep the remaining branches delivering power.
Two things CATL did not say: how many kilowatt-hours sit in the 1,000 km pack, and what charging power the 25-minute figure assumes. Without either, the claim cannot be checked against any charger that exists today.
"Commercial vehicle electrification is emerging as the third wave of the global energy transition," said Akin Li, executive president of CATL's overseas business. Zhu Lingbo, CTO of CATL's Global Business Unit, was more candid about the timescale: "Commercial vehicle electrification will unfold over more than a decade."
He is right, and the reason has almost nothing to do with batteries.
Three percent
A show-floor report by German broadcaster SAT.1 Regional put the number plainly: electric trucks account for around 3% of vehicles on German roads. The industry representatives it interviewed were emphatic that this is not a supply problem. Heavy electric haulage, as the Daimler Truck stand argued, can already run rest-break to rest-break, topping up during mandated driver pauses, covering daily distances well over 1,000 km.
The bottleneck, according to those same voices, is that hauliers do not trust they will find a charger. Megawatt charging along the Autobahn is hard to build, and operators running cross-border freight frequently find nothing waiting on the other side. Depot charging — the unglamorous half of the problem — depends on grid connections some German hauliers have waited years to receive.
Federal transport minister Steffen Bilger used the show's opening to announce a national fast-charging network for electric trucks: 4,200 charging points across 350 motorway locations, with Lower Saxony and its freight axes singled out as a priority. Announcing a network is not the same as energising one, but it is at least an admission that the vehicles are no longer the constraint.
The rest of the hall
Elektrotrucker, a German channel covering electric haulage from the driver's seat rather than the press release, spent his second day cataloguing what is genuinely buyable. BYD's ETT 44, he noted, is not a concept — it is in delivery, with first pilot fleets already running in Europe. Two pack sizes are offered: a 434 kWh short-haul version at around 9.5 tonnes and a 651 kWh long-haul 4x2 at just over 11 tonnes, both LFP blade cells, with 750 kW of drive power. Beside it stood a megawatt CCS2 charger built for Europe rather than adapted from China.
Scania broke MAN's monopoly on the low-deck tractor with the 33S, rated at 330 kW continuous. Getting the fifth-wheel height down meant raising the packs, flattening the coupling plate and shortening the wheelbase, which costs a battery position: the lowliner carries five 89 kWh gross modules for 445 kWh, against seven on a standard four-metre-wheelbase tractor. He was less impressed by the aerodynamics arms race. The Volvo FH Aero Electric took Truck of the Year and its platform twin, the Renault E-Tech T, carries 780 kWh gross for roughly 700 km — but look behind the cab fairing, he pointed out, and much of that imposing bodywork is empty space, because the cabs themselves have not been redesigned.
Tesla brought Dan Priestley to the keynote stage to confirm the Semi's European arrival next year at 550 km of usable range and 800 kW charging, with consumption of 1 kWh per kilometre measured, he stressed, at 40 tonnes rather than on a flattering part-load cycle.
Where the argument goes next
China already demonstrates that the vehicle side works at volume: electric models accounted for nearly 30% of heavy-duty truck sales there last year, according to International Council on Clean Transportation data cited by InsideEVs. CATL's scale is not in doubt either, with 289.6 GWh of global battery installations in the first seven months of 2026 and a 39.9% market share, per SNE Research. It also signed an agreement with DHL at Hannover to develop electric freight corridors across Europe.
So the spec sheets are settled and the supply chain is willing. Whether a Polish haulier running Hamburg to Milan can find a megawatt charger in 2028 is a question no battery platform, however modular, answers on its own.
