
The Escalade IQ's 205 kWh pack is a road-trip cheat code. Overnight, it is a math problem
MotorTrend's long-term Cadillac adds 137 miles in 15 minutes on a DC stall, then needs two nights on a 6.6 kW home charger. Electrek spent $750 filling the same pack across 2,650 miles.

Fifty percent on a Tesla Model Y is a reason to start looking for a plug. Fifty percent on MotorTrend's long-term Cadillac Escalade IQ is about 225 miles. Scott Evans, who has been living with the SUV for four months and 8,376 miles, had to stop flinching at the gauge. The percentage still falls. The miles left do not.
Cadillac did not make a more efficient Escalade. It put a 205 kWh NCMA pack under a body that weighs 9,061 pounds on MotorTrend's scales, then wired the pack so it can present 400 volts or 800 volts depending on the charger. Evans has a name for the method: "brute-force engineering." Two Lyriq-sized batteries, stacked, and a dare to the physics of a full-size American luxury barge.
A 15-minute stall is not a fill-up
On a capable public charger the numbers look generous. MotorTrend's instrumented run on this long-term truck added 137 miles in 15 minutes and 220 miles in 30. A 5 to 80 percent charge took 42 minutes. Cadillac still quotes up to 117 miles in about 10 minutes at 350 kW. Evans's advice, after watching those sessions, is to stop thinking in percentages. Twenty percent on this pack is still close to 100 miles. Adding 30 percent of 205 kWh is a bathroom-and-soda stop, not a fill-up.
Home is where the brute force shows its bill. A typical 6.6 kW Level 2 charger, MotorTrend measured, puts 53 kWh into the pack in eight hours. That is a quarter of the battery. Plug in after dinner from 20 percent and you will not be at 100 percent at breakfast. Cadillac's premium trims can take 19.2 kW, which the company says is good for about 36 miles of range per hour, and that rate wants a professionally installed 100-amp circuit. Luxury and Sport trims are listed at 11.5 kW. The dual-level cord in the box is 7.7 kW.
Evans charges overnight on a California time-of-use plan. He has started treating a road-trip departure the way a diesel owner treats a long grade: top it up the night before, and maybe the night before that.
The $90 stall and the $750 family trip
Efficiency so far is 2.0 miles per kWh, a little better than MotorTrend's old Rivian R1T. Energy cost is $0.31 a mile, half again the Rivian, because the Cadillac buys more electricity and because public DC prices have climbed. Fast-charge receipts that used to land under $30 in a Model Y now approach $90. Home sessions at Evans's $0.35 per kWh generally stay under $30; two of them to fill a low pack still come in under $65. EPA figures for a gasoline Escalade V-8 sit at $0.32 a mile, and $0.40 for the Escalade V, using national premium. The electric one wins that comparison only if most of the miles start in a garage.
Electrek ran the same experiment at family scale in January: Michigan to Orlando and back, 2,650 miles on the planned route. The accompanying YouTube recap counted 15 charging stops, seven extra hours over four days, an average session under 28 minutes, 88.8 kWh per stop, and a $750 charging bill. The driver rarely let the pack drop below 30 percent, which inflated the stop count, and never saw the advertised 350 kW peak. "We never got close to reaching the Escalade's max charge rate of 350 kW," the narrator said on camera. High 200s was the ceiling on the stalls they found.
Out of Spec's Kyle Conner has seen the other end of that curve. On a well-behaved high-power charger he recorded about 362 kW for a stretch, then a taper. The hardware can take the power. The network, on a random Tuesday between Michigan and Florida, often cannot.
Read the gauge in miles
MotorTrend's 70 mph road-trip range on this truck is 395 miles, against Cadillac's 465-mile claim. After 400 miles, Evans argues, a 30-minute break is not a hardship, and you rarely need another 220 miles to finish the day. That is the case for brute force on the highway. The case against it is an apartment driveway, a hotel Level 2 pedestal, or a 6.6 kW office post that will not fill 205 kWh while you sleep.
The Escalade IQ starts at $150,595 in MotorTrend's long-term spec and $160,300 as tested, with a $275 NACS adapter among the options. People who write that check usually have a house and an electrician. The rest of the electric-SUV market is still trying to make 70 kWh packs feel like 200. Cadillac skipped that assignment. Living with the result means carrying a second night of charging in your head, and reading the battery in miles, not bars.
