
VW ID. Polo pairs sharp road manners with a 392 km motorway estimate
Volkswagen's electric supermini enters general UK sale on 10 September from £23,945. Independent consumption testing points to about 392 km at 120 km/h, while the production charging peak is 105 kW.
The Volkswagen ID. Polo reaches general UK sale on 10 September with an appealing split personality. It is a compact, practical electric hatchback that independent testers praise for its chassis, but its small-car shape takes a noticeable toll at motorway speed.
Two batteries and three power outputs
Volkswagen lists two net battery capacities: a 37 kWh LFP pack and a 52 kWh NMC pack. Outputs are 85 kW (116 PS), 99 kW (135 PS) and 155 kW (211 PS), with claimed WLTP range running from 329 km to 454 km. The car is 4,053 mm long on a 2,600 mm wheelbase. Its 441-litre boot expands to 1,243 litres with the rear seats folded.
UK order books opened on 30 July with Life and Style Launch Editions priced from £25,555. The regular Life and Style models go on sale on 10 September from £23,945. Electrive reports that all UK variants combining the 52 kWh battery and 211 PS motor qualify for the government's £1,500 Electric Car Grant.
The production car charges at 105 kW
An early Electrifying prototype drive cited a 130 kW peak and a 23-minute charge from 10 to 80 per cent for the larger battery. Volkswagen's final specifications instead list 105 kW and about 24 minutes for the 52 kWh pack, while the 37 kWh version peaks at 90 kW and takes about 23 minutes. The charging time barely changed, but the advertised peak did.
Norwegian reviewer Kris Rifa reproduced the 24-minute result in colder weather after preconditioning the battery. He considers that reasonable for a 400-volt car, although he contrasted it with the 18-minute claim for the new Zeekr X and argued that a new 2026 EV should manage the same session in 22 minutes or less. That benchmark is Rifa's opinion, not a Volkswagen target.
Consumption points to 392 km at 120 km/h
Rifa drove an almost 200 km out-and-back route from north of Oslo to Moelv, then used repeated steady-speed measurements to calculate range from the 52 kWh usable capacity. At 120 km/h, the Style test car averaged 17.3 kWh/100 km. After his standard three per cent allowance for heat and discharge losses, that produced an estimated 392 km, roughly 65 per cent of the test car's 446 km WLTP rating.
“That isn't great,” Rifa said. His measurements were much kinder at lower speeds: 14.8 kWh/100 km and a calculated 351 km at 100 km/h, then 12.0 kWh/100 km and 425 km at 80 km/h. Volkswagen gives the production car a drag coefficient of 0.264. Rifa's broader point was that the short body works against aerodynamic performance as speed rises. At 120 km/h, he concluded, “this is not the best companion for traveling on a longer trip.”
The test also exposed an early software weakness. The Google-based route planner predicted arrival with 33 per cent charge, but the car returned with 23 per cent. Rifa said he had seen similar errors in other newly launched Google-based systems and expected the forecasts to improve as more cars supplied data. For now, a ten-point miss deserves a generous route-planning buffer.
The chassis earns its praise
Volkswagen quotes a curb weight starting at 1,568 kg. Rifa found the suspension slightly firm at low speed but composed and refined on the motorway, rating its control above the Xpeng P7+ he had driven on adaptive dampers and the air-suspended Zeekr 7 GT. His separate week-long review also praised the steering once the road became twisty.
Electrifying reached a similar verdict in its prototype drive: “This drives like a Polo. It drives like a Volkswagen, which is a good thing.” The front-wheel-drive MEB+ layout helps explain why a four-metre hatchback can offer adult rear space and a 441-litre boot.
The cabin reverses several unpopular Volkswagen habits. Physical keys and rotary controls are back, alongside a retro digital instrument layout inspired by the first Golf. Rifa's complaints were more prosaic: cup holders that fail to secure a half-litre bottle, awkwardly placed steering-wheel volume controls and one-pedal mode that does not retain its setting after a restart.
The GTI follows in 2027
The ID. Polo GTI raises output to 166 kW (226 PS), reaches 100 km/h in a claimed 6.8 seconds and lifts top speed from 160 to 175 km/h. Volkswagen also gives it an electronic front differential lock, 19-inch wheels and DCC adaptive dampers. The GTI retains the 52 kWh pack and 105 kW charging peak, so its case rests on chassis hardware rather than substantially more power or range.
