Tesla's 466-mile Model 3 meets the motorway

Independent drives of the revised Model 3 pack show excellent efficiency, while RWD motorway range falls from about 516 km to 429 km as speed rises.

Tesla's 466-mile WLTP number for the latest Model 3 Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive is the sort of figure that invites either applause or an argument. The independent drives now on file point somewhere less theatrical. This is a remarkably economical motorway car, but its practical range depends much more on cruising speed than the headline allows.

The revised European-market Long Range uses the newer LG pack testers often label as the 85 kWh battery. Tesla still does not print usable capacity on its UK specifications page. Three independent testers put that figure at about 79 kWh usable, with around 82 kWh gross. Tesla claims 466 miles (750 km) on 18-inch wheels, falling to 429 miles on the optional 19s.

A warm British run clears 370 miles

Richard Symons of RSEV tested a dual-motor Model 3 fitted with the revised battery on a roughly 70-mile journey back to the office in 28°C weather. The route mixed busy motorway and country roads, the air conditioning stayed on, and the car wore 19-inch wheels. It recorded 204 Wh per mile, close to 4.9 miles per kWh.

Because the trip used 18% of the indicated battery, Symons extrapolated a little more than 370 miles from full to empty. That is about 595 km, and it is useful as an upper bound for the new pack in favourable mixed driving, not as a direct RWD motorway result. He put the extra capacity at around 5% to 7% over earlier batteries, worth perhaps 20 to 25 miles.

There are limits. It was not a full discharge, the weather was unusually kind, and part of the drive was off the motorway. Symons explicitly cautioned that cold, wet winter use would return less. What it does show is the revised pack on a normal warm-day journey, climate control left on, no crawling behind a lorry.

At Autobahn speed, air collects its bill

Two continental RWD tests show why a single “real range” number can mislead. SDA Dan Cars drove the 18-inch Long Range RWD on a short out-and-back highway loop in 33°C heat, generally targeting 130 km/h. The displayed average ended at 14.8 kWh/100 km over 35 km, which his own on-screen calculation rounded to about 530 km from a 79 kWh usable pack.

That result deserves a large asterisk. The loop included acceleration, a turnaround and regenerative deceleration, and traffic on a crowded highway kept him from a perfectly steady 130 km/h cruise. He reduced his own practical expectation to about 400 to 450 km of uncomplicated highway travel.

Nonstop Driving Reviews ran the same RWD configuration at several controlled speeds and supplied the more revealing ladder. At an average 117.3 km/h, the Model 3 consumed 15.3 kWh/100 km, implying 516 km from full to empty. At an average 136.4 km/h, consumption rose to 18.4 kWh/100 km and calculated range fell to 429 km. At 184.7 km/h average, consumption reached 34.7 kWh/100 km, cutting the theoretical range to 228 km.

A prior Hyundai Ioniq 6 test on that channel was close on efficiency. The Hyundai used 14.9 kWh/100 km around 120 km/h and 19.1 kWh/100 km around 140 km/h; the Tesla was a touch thirstier at the lower speed and a touch leaner at the higher one. Nonstop put Tesla's tested pack about 5 kWh larger. Two slippery saloons, not a walkover.

361 km is the motorway number that matters

For a real trip, the 10% to 80% charging window matters more than a full-to-empty laboratory contest. Applying that 70% window to Nonstop Driving Reviews' results gives about 361 km between stops near 120 km/h, or about 301 km near 140 km/h. Put those next to a charger map, not the 750 km WLTP line.

Charging kept the long-distance case intact. Nonstop Driving Reviews recorded a 5% to 79% session in 36 minutes, with a 250 kW peak and 56.4 kWh delivered. Tesla advertises a 250 kW maximum and up to 175 miles added in 15 minutes for this version, and warns that actual range varies with speed, weather and elevation.

So no, 466 miles should not be read as a promise of 466 motorway miles. The defensible RWD takeaway is about 320 miles at roughly 120 km/h, falling toward 270 miles around 140 km/h under the tested conditions. The warm British dual-motor run still shows the revised battery stretching beyond 370 miles on a gentler mixed route. Physics is not optional here. Speed just sends the bill sooner.
