BYD's Brazil flash-charge demo did 13% to 100% in 9:31. Now build 1,000 of them

A Denza Z9 GT reached a displayed 100% in roughly nine and a half minutes at Interlagos. The charging worked; BYD's much harder promise is turning one battery-buffered showcase into a national network.

The useful number from BYD's Brazilian Flash Charging debut is not the 1,500 kW printed in the press release. It is 9 minutes and 31 seconds, called out beside a Denza Z9 GT as its dashboard reached 100% at São Paulo's Festival Interlagos.

Primo Auto kept a camera on the car and charger during the public demonstration. The battery display began at 13%, with presenters noting a nine-second delay in the video feed from inside the car. At four minutes they reported 60%; at six minutes, 75% to 76%; at 6:40, 80%; and shortly after eight minutes, 90%. The displayed state of charge reached 100% at about 9:31.

That is a serious charging result in front of an audience, not an animation. It also needs a precise label. BYD advertises 10% to 70% in five minutes and 10% to 97% in nine. The Interlagos run used different endpoints, 13% to 100%, and the broadcast did not provide a clean, independently logged power curve or energy-delivered figure. It supports the broad claim that this system can refill a compatible car in about the time of a fuel stop. It does not reproduce every line of the brochure.

The charger has its own battery problem

BYD says the Brazilian hardware can deliver up to 1,500 kW through one CCS2 connector at up to 1,000 volts. That number is so far beyond an ordinary public fast charger that the obvious question is not whether the cable can carry it, but where the site gets the power.

The answer was sitting next to the dispenser. Primo Auto's presenters and engineers repeatedly pointed to two stationary battery banks as the core of the installation. UOL's on-site report described the arrangement as a giant power bank: the local grid fills the stationary storage, which can then discharge into the car far faster than the grid connection alone could manage. The live presenters said drawing the full charging power directly from the distribution network would be impossible in most locations.

That architecture makes the headline number deployable at weaker sites, but it does not make energy free or instantaneous. A busy station must replenish its buffer between cars. Queue several compatible vehicles together and the relevant specifications become the stationary pack's capacity, its grid connection, its thermal limits and the control system's rules for sharing power. BYD has not published those site-level figures for the Brazilian rollout.

One compatible car, seven dealerships

The vehicle side is just as narrow. UOL reported that the Denza Z9 GT is currently the only model sold in Brazil able to use Flash Charging, because compatibility requires BYD's second-generation Blade battery system. Band Motor lists the Z9 GT at R$670,000, placing the first beneficiary firmly in the luxury market rather than the mass-market fleet where shorter charging stops would affect the most journeys.

BYD's own Brazilian material says the first Flash Charging site will open soon at a Denza dealership in Brasília. The company is targeting 1,000 chargers in Brazil by the end of 2027, including Denza dealers and other strategic locations. UOL counted seven Denza dealerships open when it reported from the event. Going from seven luxury-brand outlets and one compatible model to 1,000 useful chargers in roughly sixteen months is the claim that deserves the sharper stopwatch.

Site selection will matter. A battery-buffered unit can reduce the size of the required grid connection, but each location still needs enough incoming energy over a day to serve its traffic. The economics also depend on utilisation, and utilisation initially depends on selling enough second-generation Blade vehicles. Put the chargers too early in low-traffic places and expensive equipment waits. Sell the cars first and drivers queue for a scarce feature they paid to access.

What the demonstration settled

The Interlagos run answers one skeptical question cleanly: a compatible production car can take an enormous amount of charge, climb through the usual high-state-of-charge taper and reach a displayed full battery in roughly nine and a half minutes. The presenter paraphrased the event as a historic moment for Brazilian electric mobility, which was understandable with the percentage counter moving that quickly.

What it did not settle is whether 1,500 kW was actually reached, how much energy entered the car, how the stationary banks recover after repeated sessions, or what drivers will pay per kilowatt-hour. Nor did it test two cars arriving back-to-back.

Those are not objections to fast charging. They are the difference between a charger that wins an audience and a network that wins a road trip. BYD has shown the first one in Brazil. Its 1,000-site deadline now puts the second one on the clock.
