
BMW iX3 range varies by 51 miles across wheel and tyre options
EPA ratings for the 2027 BMW iX3 span 383 to 434 miles across its wheel and tyre packages. The 22-inch summer setup even beats the standard 20-inch all-season configuration.

BMW's US range sheet for the 2027 iX3 50 xDrive contains a line that looks like a typo. The 22-inch summer configuration is EPA-rated at 392 miles. The standard 20-inch all-season setup is rated at 383. An optional package with larger wheels goes nine miles farther than the standard one.
It is not a typo. The complete wheel-and-tyre package matters.
Five numbers for one car
BMW's own announcement, published from Woodcliff Lake on 7 May 2026, led with the headline figure: up to 434 miles of range, $61,500 before a $1,350 destination charge, and a US market launch on 25 September. What the headline compressed was a spread of 51 miles across the options list:
- 20-inch, summer tyres (a no-cost option): 434 miles, 118 MPGe
- 21-inch, all-season: 399 miles
- 21-inch, summer: 398 miles
- 22-inch, summer: 392 miles
- 20-inch, all-season (standard fit): 383 miles, 102 MPGe
Rank those by wheel diameter and the list makes little sense. Tyre type plainly matters, but BMW publishes ratings for complete packages rather than isolating rim design and tyre compound. The two configurations at the extremes share a 20-inch diameter, not necessarily the same wheel. The honest conclusion is narrower: 51 miles, about 13% of the standard configuration's range, separates the listed 20-inch packages.
The 21-inch pairing is the odd one out, with all-seasons rated a single mile ahead of summers. A one-mile difference is too small to support a useful claim about which tyre is more efficient. Across the full table, however, wheel diameter alone clearly does not predict range.
What the car actually did in Norway
In June, the Norwegian Automobile Federation and Motor magazine ran 24 electric cars out of Oslo on full batteries with instructions to keep going until they could no longer hold the speed limit. Drivers used regenerative braking in town and adaptive cruise where useful, with every car in normal mode. The iX3 50 xDrive covered 781 km (485 miles) and finished first.
More striking than the win was the direction of the error. Electrek's account put the result about seven miles beyond BMW's 770 km WLTP claim, a positive deviation of roughly 1.5%. Carscoops noted that the same result was 11.7% above the 434-mile EPA maximum. Several cars beat their homologated figures in Oslo, where the test ran on dry roads in mild temperatures of 12 to 18C.
The field around it is worth reading. Lucid's Gravity managed 720 km for second, 3.7% short of its claim. The Mercedes CLA 350 4Matic took third on 675 km. The largest positive deviation belonged to the Xpeng X9, a Chinese MPV that covered 646 km against a 580 km rating, an improvement of 11.4%. At the other end, the MG IM6 fell 11.7% short of its 505 km figure. "We were surprised to see such a large negative deviation for this MG, especially when the other MG model, the S6, achieved a positive deviation of 3.4 per cent," NAF senior communications adviser Nils Sødal told Carscoops.
The number that survives a motorway
ArenaEV ran the same 50 xDrive at three fixed speeds on 21-inch wheels and summer tyres in 20C, and got a much blunter answer: 1,025 km at 60 km/h, 750 km at 90 km/h, and about 490 km at a steady 130 km/h. That last figure works out to roughly 22.2 kWh per 100 km, and it is less than half the 60 km/h result.
ArenaEV compared the result with an earlier run on 20-inch winter tyres. At the highest test speed, it found that the aerodynamic penalty of the bigger rim and the rolling-resistance advantage of the summer tyre almost cancelled. The comparison reinforces a practical point: speed, temperature and tyre specification all affect the answer, so the EPA packages and these independent road tests should not be treated as controlled tyre experiments.
Why the spread matters more than the headline
The iX3 is BMW's first series-production Neue Klasse car and its first EV based on an 800-volt architecture, with a pack ArenaEV lists at 108.7 kWh usable. BMW quotes a 400 kW peak DC rate, a 10-to-80% charge in 21 minutes and a NACS port fitted as standard in the US. The independent results so far show strong efficiency, but under very different test conditions.
A buyer arriving after the September launch may hear about a 434-mile iX3, while the standard configuration is rated at 383 miles. BMW lists the 20-inch summer package that earns the higher figure as a no-cost option, but summer tyres are not suitable for winter conditions. Both figures are official. Buyers need to check the rating for the wheel-and-tyre package they will actually use.
