Toyota's newest EV can lose drive power. The fix is a dealer visit, not a download

About 10,000 2026 C-HR crossovers in North America can shut down under regenerative braking when the pack is already full. Toyota's patch is software, but it will not fly through the air.

Toyota's smallest American EV has been on sale a few months, and the company is already calling the fleet back. Not for a battery module, not for a motor, and not for a rattle. For a software bug that can stop the car while it is moving.

On 2 September, Toyota's U.S. newsroom said it is recalling approximately 10,000 model-year 2026 C-HR vehicles in North America. Regenerative braking, which turns the motors into generators and feeds energy into the pack, can overcharge that pack when the state of charge is already high. Toyota names the Battery Electric Vehicle Electronic Control Unit. If the overcharge happens, the electric drive system can shut down. The company's language is blunt: "A loss of motive power while driving at higher speeds can increase the risk of a crash."

Car and Driver, using Toyota's sales figures, counted 6,321 C-HRs sold in the United States through the end of August and judged that the recall covers nearly every C-HR on the road in North America. Driving.ca reported about 1,310 Canadian vehicles in the same campaign. NHTSA had not posted the federal recall file as of 9 September, so VIN checks on the agency site still come up empty. Toyota says owner letters go out in early November.

The pack's own safety switch is what stops the car

InsideEVs walked through the chain that makes this more than a charging quirk. When a traction battery is already full, it will not accept more energy. Guardrails then shut the drive system down to prevent overcharging. On a 2026 C-HR, that shutdown can happen while the crossover is still rolling. The feature written to protect the pack is the one that can take propulsion away from the driver.

The remedy is a software update to that battery ECU. It is free, and it has to be done at a Toyota dealer. InsideEVs flagged the part that will grate on anyone who has lived with a Tesla or a Hyundai: the C-HR cannot receive the patch over the air. It arrived in U.S. showrooms alongside the new RAV4, which got Toyota's newer Arene infotainment stack. The C-HR did not. During its own time with the car, InsideEVs found a 14-inch touchscreen that was slow to boot, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and little else in the way of modern software.

A 2026 car that still needs a service bay

Allcarnews walked through a U.S.-spec C-HR in a late-June YouTube review and listed the hardware that made this recall population complete so quickly: a 74.7 kWh pack, dual-motor all-wheel drive as the only layout, 338 horsepower, and a NACS port. The channel's spec sheet put DC charging at 150 kW, 10 to 80 percent in 30 minutes. None of that charging hardware is being replaced. The car's problem is not that it charges too slowly. It is that, with a full pack, regen can ask the battery to take energy it should refuse, and the refusal currently includes shutting down propulsion.

Car and Driver's instrumented test of the C-HR, published well before the recall, timed 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds at a curb weight of 4,447 pounds and called the handling indifferent. MotorWeek's road loop put an XSE on pace for 266 miles against a 273-mile rating. Those are the numbers of a small, quick, slightly awkward crossover Toyota priced from $38,450 including destination. WardsAuto's first-drive notes put the same dual-motor, 74.7 kWh package at 287 miles on 18-inch wheels and 273 miles on the XSE's 20s.

What owners can do before the letter arrives

Until November, Toyota directs owners to toyota.com/recall and, once the federal file is live, nhtsa.gov/recalls, using a VIN. The Brand Engagement Center number in the press release is 1-800-331-4331. Electrek noted that 2027 C-HR models are already on sale and are not part of this campaign. Only the 2026 cars are.

A dealer flash is cheaper than a pack swap. It is also slower than a download, and it leaves every 2026 C-HR on the road in the same state until the owner finds a bay. For a crossover Toyota sold as a 2026 product, that is the detail that will age worse than the bug itself.
