
Tesla's cheapest Model Y is two packs. Highway tests finally gave each a number
A U.S. Standard held 4.13 mi/kWh to 285.6 miles at 70 mph. Europe's 64 kWh LFP car just posted 116 Wh/km at 90. Same badge, two batteries, two honest highway figures.

Drive Tesla's cheapest Model Y at a GPS-locked 70 mph and the EPA's 321-mile sticker does not come with you. Out of Spec Testing's Wes ran a U.S. Standard around a North Carolina loop until the car could no longer hold speed and stopped the clock at 285.6 miles. Efficiency, not the leftover miles, was the figure he kept repeating: 4.13 miles per kilowatt-hour in weather averaging 56°F. "That's nuts for 70 mi an hour on the highway," he said, later calling the same result "crazy good at 70 mi an hour for a crossover SUV."
The dash had already shown zero at 268 miles, after 65 kilowatt-hours and 242 watt-hours per mile. That is the range a driver who treats 0% as a wall will actually use. The extra distance lived in Tesla's below-zero buffer, which the car will still spend if you keep asking for 70 mph. Tesla quotes 69.5 kWh of usable energy in the American pack; the test pulled a little more once the gauge had given up.
The badge is covering two batteries
Shoppers lining up YouTube tests this month are not always watching the same machine. U.S. Standard cars from Fremont and Austin use a trimmed nickel-cobalt-aluminium pack and that 321-mile EPA rating on 18-inch wheels, at $39,990 before destination. Cars from Shanghai and Berlin — the ones Bjørn Nyland and most European reviewers have been driving — use a CATL lithium-iron-phosphate pack Tesla describes as about 64 kWh. Electrek's Bastien Theron, in a Canadian LFP Standard, was working from a 463 km rating and 7.3 km/kWh. Over roughly 550 km of highway, back roads and city driving he averaged 7.4 km/kWh. "I'm pleased to report the rated efficiency can be achieved while driving normally," he wrote.
On back roads at 78 km/h the same car returned 8.0 km/kWh. The cheap Model Y's actual trick is not a hidden long-range module. It is a smaller battery, LFP chemistry that Tesla is happy to charge to 100%, and a redesigned rear motor Juniper put in the Y.
90, 110, 120, 130: a European speed ladder
Nyland's range test, published 22 August, put two motorway speeds on the European car. At a GPS 90 km/h the trip computer showed 116.7 Wh/km, which he corrected to 116 Wh/km at 16°C. At 120 km/h it was 163.9 Wh/km. He measured closer to 57–58 kWh down to 0%, against the 64 kWh label, and still called the slower run "very impressive. 500 km range." A mixed motorway stint averaging close to 100 km/h projected around 380 km. "The test today shows that this standard is more efficient than the long range rear-wheel drive, the premium unit I tested earlier," he said.
TESLA Geek, running a French Standard with a 534 km WLTP claim, built the same ladder at different posted limits. On the Nationale 10 at 110 km/h he used 133.6 Wh/km and half the battery over 221 km, which he projected to 442 km from 100 to 0%. At 130 km/h consumption rose to 151 Wh/km and the projected full-charge distance fell to 382 km from a pack he put at roughly 60 to 62.5 kWh. None of those highway figures match 534 km. All of them are usable touring numbers for a 64 kWh-class SUV if the driver will leave the limiter alone.
Keep the stops short
Nyland's 1,000 km challenge, posted a day later, is the road-trip translation. The LFP car finished in 9 hours and 25 minutes after he shaved a traffic delay, charging mostly into the 50–60% window rather than waiting for 80. Peak Supercharger power held around 175 kW into the mid-20s percent, which is the whole point of a small, efficient pack: you do not need to sit there topping it off. TESLA Geek timed 5 to 75% in 23 minutes and 15 to 80% in 22 minutes, seeing about 175 kW enter the battery. Theron, limited to a V2 Supercharger capped at 143 kW, still did 10 to 80% in 24 minutes.
Edmunds had already put the American Standard through a mixed loop and recorded 337 miles, 16 beyond the EPA sticker, at 22.8 kWh per 100 miles. Out of Spec inherited that same car for the 70 mph run; InsideEVs published both figures. Highway and mixed driving are not arguing. They are measuring different days. A laboratory cycle that includes slower miles will not predict a day spent in the left lane, and that gap is not unique to Tesla.
Nyland, back in a Tesla after a stretch of laggy rivals, put the engineering claim as plainly as it gets: "This is how efficient things are supposed to be. And this is only 400-V architecture, not even 800-V." Buyers still have to pick the highway number that matches their roads. The American Standard's honest 70 mph figure is 286 miles, or 268 if zero on the dash is your stop. The European LFP car's honest 120 km/h consumption is 164 Wh/km. The 321-mile and 534 km stickers are for a different kind of day.
