
Ola's S1Z reaches for 301 km by keeping its ambition to 70 km/h
Ola's cheapest new long-range scooter pairs a 5.1 kWh battery with modest performance. The resulting 301 km figure needs careful translation.
Three hundred and one kilometres is an excellent way to make a commuter scooter sound like a grand tourer. Ola Electric has attached that certified range to the 5.1 kWh version of its new S1Z, priced at an introductory ₹99,999. There is a smaller ₹79,999 model too, with a 3.1 kWh battery and 179 km of certified range.
The numbers are striking, but the clever part of the S1Z is not a miraculous battery. Ola has put a large pack into a relatively modest scooter: both versions top out at 70 km/h and use a 4 kW peak motor. That combination can do splendid work on a gentle laboratory cycle. It does not turn 301 km into a promise for a fast commute, a pillion ride or a hilly route.
Range bought with battery, speed kept in check
Ola says the S1Z uses its 46-series LFP Bharat Cell, developed in Bengaluru and made at its Tamil Nadu gigafactory. The 3.1 kWh model is rated at 179 km under the Indian Driving Cycle, while the 5.1 kWh model is rated at 301 km. Those figures work out to roughly 58 and 59 certified kilometres per kilowatt-hour. Consistency between the two packs is reassuring, but it also reveals the recipe: more range comes chiefly from carrying more cells, not from a hidden leap between variants.
The bigger model is actually slower from zero to 40 km/h, taking a claimed 4.9 seconds against 4.6 seconds for the smaller pack. Both stop accelerating at the same 70 km/h. Creator Rupam Vlogs, reviewing the specifications immediately after launch, described the scooter as fundamentally based on the familiar S1 X shape and treated its restrained motor output as part of the cost-cutting and range equation. His most sensible advice was to reserve judgment until customer deliveries begin.
That restraint matters because Ola is selling a certified result. IDC testing runs a prescribed cycle under controlled conditions, rather than following a rider through heat, traffic, gradients and faster roads. BikeDekho's explanation of the test gives a useful historical reality check: an earlier Ola S1 Pro rated at 181 km returned 147.6 km in its road test. That example is not a conversion formula for the S1Z, but it shows why a laboratory maximum and a usable daily radius are different numbers.
Ola's own chart supplies a second number
The most revealing comparison comes from Ola itself. In its February 2026 shareholder letter, the company plotted selected scooters by real-world range and price. Its S1 Pro+ with a 5.2 kWh pack sat at about 170 km of real range, while the S1 X 4 kWh sat at about 142 km. The new S1Z is slower than the Pro+, so it may consume less energy at urban speeds, but no independent test has yet established by how much.
That makes 301 km useful for comparing certification results, not for planning a 290 km day. A buyer should instead ask what the scooter delivers at 40, 55 and 70 km/h, with the intended rider load, and how much reserve remains before performance is restricted. Until instrumented road tests answer those questions, Ola has provided an impressive ceiling rather than a dependable travel budget.
The price is real; the scooters are not yet with owners
The launch also carries a calendar footnote large enough to affect the purchase decision. Ola says deliveries of the 3.1 kWh S1Z will begin in December 2026. The 5.1 kWh version, the one behind the 301 km headline, is not due until March 2027. Bookings are open before either model can accumulate owner evidence.
This is also a substantial rewrite of the S1 Z name. The earlier version was announced with removable 1.5 kWh modules and lower ₹59,999 and ₹64,999 prices. Reporting on the new launch notes that history, while Ola's current product page now presents 3.1 and 5.1 kWh versions at higher prices. The name stayed; the proposition changed from a light modular runabout to an LFP scooter built around unusually long certified range.
Ola chairman Bhavish Aggarwal calls it the first scooter range to bring the company's made-in-India LFP technology “to the heart of the market, where millions of customers make their mobility decisions.” Local cell production at this price is the genuinely consequential part. LFP chemistry is valued for thermal stability and cycle life, and vertical integration could give Ola more control over its largest hardware cost.
Wait for the boring evidence
The S1Z deserves attention because ₹99,999 for 5.1 kWh is aggressive, not because every owner will ride 301 km between plugs. Before paying, look for independent tests that publish average speed, riding mode, rider mass, elevation and energy remaining. Watch the charging time too: Ola quotes six hours and 16 minutes from zero to 80% for the large pack on home charging. A giant daily range is less useful if a missed overnight charge is awkward to recover.
If the S1Z delivers strong urban efficiency, sound thermal management and reliable service, its modest 70 km/h ceiling may look like disciplined engineering rather than deprivation. For now, the brochure has won the range contest. The road has not voted.
