
Kia's new GT trio gets fake gears and real grip, but still charges for 31 minutes
The EV3 GT, EV4 GT and EV5 GT add dual motors and adaptive suspension without gaining the EV6 GT's faster 800-volt charging.

Kia has built three electric GTs for drivers who want a quicker school run, then given them simulated gear changes, synthetic engine noise and launch control. The theatre will divide opinion. The hardware underneath it is harder to dismiss.
The EV3 GT, EV4 GT and EV5 GT are now entering the European market after their initial Brussels motor show appearance. All three use two motors and all-wheel drive, an 81.4 kWh battery, electronically controlled suspension and torque vectoring. Kia's Virtual Gear Shift and Active Sound Design provide the noise and stepped acceleration an electric motor naturally lacks.
This is not the halo brutality of an EV6 GT. The EV3 GT and EV4 GT each make 215 kW and 468 Nm. Kia quotes 0-100 km/h in 5.7 seconds for the upright EV3 and 5.6 seconds for the lower EV4. The larger EV5 GT produces 225 kW and 480 Nm, reaching 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds.
One recipe, three different bodies
The shared specification risks making the trio sound like a trim package multiplied across a catalogue. Early driving reports suggest the body shapes still produce distinct cars.
Seb On Wheels drove all three around Norway's Atlantic Road. Electrifying's Nicola spent most of that Norway trip in the EV4 GT, found it the more involving car, and treated the EV5 as a quick family SUV rather than a scaled-up hot hatch. Those are subjective assessments, not instrumented tests, but they align with the engineering: the lower EV4 starts with a useful centre-of-gravity and aerodynamic advantage, while the EV5 has more mass and frontal area to manage.
The equipment is not merely cosmetic. Kia quotes more direct steering on the GT cars, while GT-specific damper and torque-vectoring calibration can control how quickly each car responds and rotates. Semi-bucket seats, a dedicated GT mode and a performance timer make the intent obvious from inside. Neon-green details perform the traditional hot-car duty of warning passengers before the first roundabout.
The charging number exposes the platform choice
Every model carries the same conspicuous limitation. Kia quotes 10-80% DC charging in 31 minutes for the EV3 GT and EV4 GT, and 30 minutes for the EV5 GT. Their regular E-GMP underpinnings use a 400-volt-class electrical system, rather than the 800-volt architecture that helps the EV6 GT complete the same percentage window much faster under suitable conditions.
Current Kia figures put the EV3 GT at up to 501 km WLTP, the EV4 GT hatchback at 505 km, the EV4 GT fastback at up to 537 km, and the EV5 GT at 476 km. Some of those numbers are still being homologated. Twenty-inch wheels, two motors and performance tyres all work against efficiency, so buyers should wait for independent motorway tests before planning a 500 km leg.
Kia has spent its engineering budget on road behaviour and a broad performance range, not a new high-voltage charging system. A half-hour stop is acceptable for many families. It also looks ordinary beside the company's own EV6 and the new wave of 800-volt competitors. GT badges do not shorten queues or make a cold battery accept its advertised peak.
Performance is becoming a range, not a halo
Kia's official European material positions the trio below the EV6 GT and EV9 GT, creating five battery-electric performance models across hatchback and SUV sizes. That breadth is the actual news. Electric performance is moving away from one expensive flagship and into models chosen for boot shape and parking footprint.
Pricing determines whether the idea works. German reporting lists the EV3 GT from €53,990, EV4 GT from €57,840 and EV5 GT from €59,990. Those figures sit only modestly above highly equipped GT-Line versions in that market, although local taxes and specifications vary. Buyers should compare like for like: GT-Line is largely an appearance and equipment pack, while GT adds the higher-output dual-motor setup, chassis changes and performance software.
The simulated gearbox is optional entertainment. Drivers who find it silly can switch it off and keep the useful parts: traction on wet roads, controlled damping and stronger overtaking performance. That separation may be Kia's smartest decision. The company can sell drama to people who miss combustion cues without forcing every owner to listen to an electric car cosplay as a petrol one.
