BYD's tiny Racco has 1,500 Japanese orders, but its first road trip found the catch

BYD's electric kei car is drawing buyers beyond the base model. An independent Japan road trip shows why, and where its charging hardware still feels modest.

BYD did not need to beat Japan's kei-car establishment in a month. It needed evidence that Japanese buyers would take a Chinese-built minicar seriously. The Racco has supplied some: BYD Auto Japan says cumulative orders reached roughly 1,500 by the end of August, while its six-model range produced a company-record 1,260 orders during the month.

The revealing detail is what customers chose. About eight in ten Racco orders were for the most expensive 300 Premium, according to BYD, despite an entry model designed to slip below two million yen after Japan's national subsidy. Buyers appear to be paying for the bigger battery and equipment rather than treating the car as a cheap experiment.

An independent multi-day road test now adds texture to those order numbers. New Zealand EV reviewer Gavin Shoebridge drove the 300 Premium hundreds of kilometres from Tokyo towards Mount Fuji, charged it twice and tried, unsuccessfully, to sleep in it. His experience suggests BYD has understood the daily kei-car brief better than the modest charging figures might imply.

The expensive one is doing the selling

The Racco range starts at 2,145,000 yen for the 200, which has a 22.4 kWh LFP battery and a certified 210 km WLTC range. The 300 Plus and 300 Premium use a 35.84 kWh pack and carry a 320 km rating. Prices rise to 2,398,000 and 2,497,000 yen respectively before subsidies.

Those are not interchangeable versions. The smaller car is limited to 3 kW AC charging and roughly 30 kW DC, while the larger-battery variants accept 6 kW AC and about 50 kW DC. All use a 47 kW front motor, the regulatory ceiling for the kei class, with 160 Nm of torque.

BYD says only 81 Raccos were registered in August, chiefly base cars. That distinction keeps the 1,500-order headline honest: most customer vehicles had not yet arrived, and volume deliveries of the popular Premium were scheduled to begin in the second half of September. Orders measure intent; registrations will show whether the launch converts cleanly.

A road trip exposes the right weakness

Shoebridge's video is casual in tone but useful as an ownership test. The Racco remained stable and comparatively quiet on motorways and winding roads, he reported, with its low battery helping a tall, narrow body feel more planted than its proportions suggest. His observed energy display showed 11.3 kWh per 100 km after some enthusiastic driving, although that is a dashboard reading from one trip, not a controlled efficiency result.

The charging stops were less flattering. The 300 Premium peaked around the advertised 50 kW class, a sensible match for a small pack but unremarkable in 2026. The car also stopped one attempted charging test at 70 percent, preventing a clean 10-to-80-percent measurement. Shoebridge's broader experience finding and activating Japanese chargers was uneven, which matters more on an improvised road trip than another 10 kW on the spec sheet.

This is not really a miniature grand tourer. A nominal 320 km WLTC figure and 6 kW home charging are ample for the urban and regional work kei cars normally perform. Repeated rapid-charge stops turn the Racco's small-car virtues into waiting time. That limitation is easier to accept than poor cabin packaging would have been, because the latter would undermine the car every day.

BYD studied how small cars earn their space

The Racco is 3,395 mm long and 1,475 mm wide, yet its boxy 1,800 mm height, dual power sliding doors and movable rear bench make it behave like a much larger family appliance. Shoebridge found useful rear room, straightforward access and enough cargo flexibility to build a roughly flat sleeping platform. The overnight attempt failed on comfort and summer heat, not because the seats could not be rearranged.

There are signs of careful localisation beyond the silhouette. BYD developed a dedicated compact motor after testing concluded an existing unit was not suitable for Japan's steep residential roads. The battery uses LFP cells developed for the limited footprint, refrigerant-based cooling and a structural cell-to-body installation. BYD says more than 70 percent of the body uses high-strength steel and is targeting a five-star JNCAP result, but that rating remains an ambition until the car is independently tested.

The cabin mixes genuinely handy details with familiar software compromises. Power rear doors can be opened by a foot sensor, the battery can be preheated, and vehicle-to-load is available. The review also found weak regenerative braking, no wireless phone charging and too many controls inside the central screen. None is fatal; all will be noticed by buyers accustomed to decades of polished Japanese kei ergonomics.

The real test starts with deliveries

BYD says four-fifths of Racco customers are new to the brand. Its own survey of 100 contracted buyers ranked perceived solidity, equipment, safety, warranty and range as the leading purchase reasons. That is encouraging company research, not an independent market study, but it aligns with the road test: the car's appeal is packaging and confidence rather than novelty alone.

Japan's domestic brands still possess denser dealer coverage, ingrained trust and formidable kei expertise. BYD has nevertheless found 1,500 people willing to place an order, most for the version with fewer compromises. September's Premium deliveries will provide the harder evidence: registrations, charging behaviour and owners living with the touchscreen after the showroom enthusiasm fades.
