Ather launched a 200 km Konarc. Buyers may wait a year for that battery

The Konarc arrives with sensible hardware and two orderable range choices, while its headline 200 km version sits on a much later timetable.

Tarun Mehta spent Ather Community Day selling the Konarc as a scooter for the three in four Indian scooter buyers still on petrol. Four Konarc S range options went on the slide: 100, 125, 161 and 200 km. The last of those will do most of the advertising. It is also the one Ather does not yet sell.

The versions currently offered in select cities are the Konarc S with 125 km and 161 km of IDC range. Ather estimates their more realistic TrueRange figures at 100 km and 130 km. The entry 100 km S is due in the fourth quarter of India's 2026-27 financial year. Better-equipped Konarc Z variants are expected around the first quarter of 2027-28, and the 200 km Konarc S around the third quarter of that year — late 2027, more than a year after this launch.

The hardware on the available models is unusually practical: a 14-inch front wheel, a metal body, an onboard charger and a starting price of ₹99,999 for the later 100 km S. Buyers should still shop the Konarc by variant, not by billboard.

Four batteries, two available choices

The official launch presentation framed that breadth as a way to match a battery to weekly travel. In a subsequent interview with ThePrint, Mehta described the Konarc as Ather's first scooter with 200 km of range, its first with 14-inch wheels and its first with an onboard charger, and linked it to the company's effort to move petrol-scooter customers to electric.

The specification sheet puts useful engineering under the first three numbers. The 100 km, 125 km and 161 km scooters use 2.1 kWh, 2.7 kWh and 3.5 kWh packs. All are listed with IP67 protection, an aluminium battery casing and a 450 W onboard charger. All three listed S models are rated at 70 km/h. The two larger packs produce 4.7 kW, against 4 kW for the 100 km bike, and take a claimed 4 hours 30 minutes or 5 hours 40 minutes to charge from zero to 80% on the onboard unit.

A second 450 W charger can work alongside the onboard unit. It is included with the 161 km version and offered as an add-on lower down the range, cutting the claimed 0-80% home-charging time for the 161 km model to 3 hours 10 minutes. Grid charging adds up to 15 km in ten minutes on listed variants. Those are modest power figures, but an onboard charger solves a familiar two-wheeler annoyance: owners do not have to carry a bulky charging brick everywhere.

The ₹99,999 scooter is also later

The launch price deserves the same timetable check as the 200 km range. Ather says Konarc pricing starts at ₹99,999, but the 100 km S that anchors that number is a future variant. The company currently tells customers to check local availability for the 125 km and 161 km versions, and bookings are open only in select markets. At the 29 August keynote Mehta put S-line deliveries from 21 September; Ather's FAQ says deliveries have begun in select cities.

That does not make the launch price false. It makes it a poor guide to what a customer will spend for near-term delivery. A buyer comparing the Konarc with a petrol scooter or an electric rival should ask the dealer for the on-road price of an available battery size, whether the combined charger is included and which connected features require AtherStack Pro.

The warranty needs similar precision. The standard battery cover is three years or 30,000 km. AtherStack Pro is a paid add-on; with it, the FAQ says the battery cover extends to five years or 60,000 km at no extra warranty charge. Eight-year/80,000 km cover then costs ₹4,999, while ten-year/100,000 km cover costs ₹8,999. Launch coverage that simply calls this a ten-year warranty leaves out the purchase condition.

What you can actually take home

Independent launch reporting identifies the Konarc as Ather's move beyond its premium, sporty 450 lineage. The recipe supports that reading: a steel unibody chassis, long-travel suspension, 31 litres of under-seat storage, a two-litre front compartment and a 10,000 km service interval. The available 125 km and 161 km versions weigh 126.5 kg and 129 kg, figures that put practicality ahead of featherweight simplicity. The rear wheel is 12 inches; the 14-inch claim is the front.

Ather also used Community Day to show AtherNode, a managed apartment-charging system, and True Health, an app-based vehicle and battery-health report with an estimated resale value. Mehta said AtherNode is meant to spread limited building power across many parking spaces rather than electrify only a handful of bays. The company plans an initial six-city deployment from December, starting in Bengaluru. True Health could be useful in the used market, although its scores and price estimate remain company-generated until buyers or independent inspectors can validate them.

The Konarc's strongest case today is not its maximum promised range. It is the 125 km or 161 km scooter that combines a large front wheel, useful storage, a metal chassis and charging hardware that stays on the vehicle. The 200 km model may broaden that case later. For now, it belongs in a future-products comparison, not in the price-and-range maths for a scooter you can order this month.
